What TCR brings to Japan

TCR Engineering serves Japan through an alliance with Chugai Technos Corporation of Hiroshima, under a memorandum of understanding signed on 29 April 2026. Materials testing, non-destructive testing, asset integrity and failure investigation run under TCR's NABL ISO/IEC 17025:2017 accreditation in Navi Mumbai. ARTiS reformer tube inspection mobilises to Japanese sites.

TCR Engineering Services は、広島の中外テクノス株式会社様との業務提携(2026年4月29日締結の覚書)を通じて日本市場にサービスをご提供します。材料試験、非破壊検査、アセットインテグリティ評価、破損解析は NABL ISO/IEC 17025:2017 認定(登録番号 NABLT0726MH18640)のもとで実施し、ARTiS リフォーマー管検査は日本国内の現場へ出張対応いたします。

  • One accredited signature. NABL ISO/IEC 17025:2017, certificate NABLT0726MH18640, 1,483 accredited test methods, accepted in more than 90 economies under the ILAC mutual recognition arrangement.
  • A Japanese interface. Contracting, site coordination and day-to-day communication run through Chugai Technos in Hiroshima, so a Japanese asset owner deals with a Japanese company.
  • Two-way, not a distribution deal. Chugai's Scale Checker and drone inspection are going into India and the Gulf in the same agreement.
  • ARTiS is the entry point, not the boundary. The full TCR catalogue is available to Japanese owners from day one.

Two houses of similar vintage, and what the alliance carries in both directions / 中外テクノス様との提携

Chugai Technos Corporation of Hiroshima was founded in 1953. TCR Engineering was founded in Mumbai in 1973. Both are independent, technically-led inspection houses that outlasted three generations of competitors in a sector dominated by global conglomerates, and both stayed independent for the same reason: they invested in customer relationships over decades rather than quarters. The memorandum of understanding signed on 29 April 2026 between TCR Engineering Services Pvt. Ltd., Chugai Technos Corporation and Chugai Technos India Pvt. Ltd. of Bengaluru is two years, project-based, non-exclusive, and deliberately two-way.

  • The Scale Checker. A radioisotope system that measures scale, sludge and fouling inside a live pipeline without removing insulation or stopping flow. TCR is taking it into two markets: power generation, where internal oxide scale on boiler tubes governs remaining life, and refining and petrochemicals, where fouling governs throughput.
  • Drone structural inspection. Bridges, tanks, flare stacks and heritage structures, with crack detection to 0.2 mm, alongside TCR's own record of 500+ bridge inspections across India.
  • Japanese-grade environmental and emissions testing. Stack and ambient monitoring, AIG, SCR, APH, ESP and FGD performance testing, PFAS analysis and greenhouse-gas inventory work, as Indian CPCB norms and Saudi NCEC standards tighten.

ARTiS is the reason for the first conversation. It is not the boundary of the relationship. TCR runs six service pillars out of an NABL ISO/IEC 17025:2017 accredited laboratory with 1,483 accredited test methods, and every one of them is available to a Japanese owner through Chugai Technos from day one.

Behind all six sit the two things a Japanese engineer will ask about first: an accredited laboratory, and a failure investigation practice with more than 9,000 cases on record, including 1,500+ boiler tube failures. The company has been doing this since 1973 and holds NADCAP AC7101 accreditation for aerospace materials testing at two laboratories.

ARTiS, the first service into Japan / 日本市場への第一歩、ARTiS

ARTiS is a robotic crawler that clamps at platform level, climbs each radiant reformer tube and takes four measurements over its full length in a single pass. The output is a Level 3 assessment to API 579-1 / ASME FFS-1 Part 10 with a retirement date for every tube, not a pass or a fail. Tube outer diameters from 105 to 190 mm, to a climbing height of 15,000 mm.

Taking ARTiS to Japanese refiners / 日本の製油所への展開

Naoshi Kawabe and the Chugai Technos team have presented ARTiS to Japan's major refiners in person: Idemitsu Kosan, Fuji Oil, Toa Oil and Cosmo Oil. JFE Engineering has expressed interest from a maintenance standpoint. The photographs below are the alliance being built the way both companies believe it has to be built: in the room, in front of the people who own the turnaround.

Japan has no ARTiS installation yet, and we do not claim one. The record behind the technology is Indian and international: more than 100 reformer tube assignments, over 80 of them using ARTiS, more than 50,000 tubes scanned, and a reference base of 100,000+ in-situ replica microstructures read by in-house metallographers. That record is what the Japanese programme is being built on.

It returns a retirement date for each tube rather than a pass or a fail. The assessment is Level 3 to API 579-1 and ASME FFS-1 Part 10, and it carries accumulated creep damage, effective tube metal temperature and remaining life tube by tube. ARTiS は合否判定ではなく、管ごとの交換時期をご提示します。

100本の検査にどれくらいかかりますか。 / How long does an ARTiS inspection take?

Two days for 100 tubes, against four to five days for a manual scan including access. No scaffolding is required, because the crawler clamps at platform level and climbs the tube it is inspecting. 100本で2日、足場は不要です。

適用できる管の寸法と材質は。 / Which tube sizes and materials are covered?

なぜ光高温計の測定値を使わないのですか。 / Why does ARTiS not trust the measured tube metal temperature?

Optical pyrometers depend on emissivity, which falls from about 0.9 on a new rough tube towards 0.6 as the surface oxidises, so the measured value drifts away from the real one. ARTiS back-calculates the effective temperature from the damage actually present, using the Larson-Miller parameter.
