India builds more aerospace hardware every year than it can independently qualify at home. A salute, first

On 15 August India completes 79 years of independence, and TCR Engineering wishes every countryman a very happy Independence Day. This year the greeting carries extra weight for anyone who works in materials. On 18 July 2026, Vikram-1, built by the Hyderabad startup Skyroot Aerospace, became the first privately developed Indian rocket to reach orbit from Sriharikota. A private Indian launcher, designed, forged, cast, machined, heat treated and flown from Indian soil, is exactly what the phrase Make in India was coined to describe, and we applaud everyone who carried it there.

TCR's own association with Indian spaceflight runs deep. The relationship with ISRO goes back to Project ASLV, where the laboratory carried materials testing and earned ISRO's written appreciation, and continues through the rocket-motor casing hardware for the Chandrayaan-3 lunar mission, tested through Larsen and Toubro Defence for VSSC-ISRO with no non-conformity observed. The aerospace and defence bench has served this vertical for five decades, and through aerospace, the space and defence programmes that grew from it.

Make in India is only half a supply chain

A component is not finished when it leaves the furnace. Every aerospace heat-treat lot, forging batch and casting run must be proven: tensile properties at room and elevated temperature, case depth, grain size, freedom from decarburisation, alpha case on titanium, hardness and conductivity in the specified band. The world's primes accept that evidence from one framework, Nadcap, administered by the Performance Review Institute.

India now has a substantial Nadcap manufacturing base. An August 2026 reading of the Qualified Manufacturers List shows 51 Indian listings holding Nadcap heat treating accreditation, concentrated in Karnataka, Telangana, Tamil Nadu and Maharashtra, with a growing arc across Uttar Pradesh, Haryana and Gujarat. Yet much of the independent laboratory evidence behind those special processes still flies to Europe or North America, adding two to four weeks of freight, customs and queue time to every qualification cycle, and sending testing spend out of the country with it.

Make in India, without Test in India, leaves the schedule and the money offshore. That is the gap TCR Engineering is committed to closing, and it is why our Nadcap scope was built around exactly the tests a heat treater, forge shop, foundry or machine shop must buy.

What the TCR Nadcap scope covers

The laboratory's Nadcap accreditation is AC7101, Materials Testing Laboratories. The audit criteria and methods on the certificate:

The laboratory type on the certificate is independent, which is the status a prime's approval framework asks for: TCR does not run the heat treatment it verifies.

Two items in that scope are worth particular attention

Alpha case on wrought titanium, AC7101/4 code (L8). Any manufacturer running vacuum or atmosphere cycles on titanium knows how few laboratories in this region hold this under accreditation rather than as a general capability. The oxygen-enriched surface layer that forms on titanium at temperature is brittle, it initiates cracks in service, and an aerospace customer will ask for evidence traceable to an accredited method rather than to a laboratory's own practice.

Electrical conductivity inspection, AC7101/5 code (M4). The verification customers ask for after solution treatment and ageing of aluminium alloys, because conductivity resolves temper and heat-treat condition where hardness alone is ambiguous. It is also among the tests most often sent across a border, which puts an aluminium airframe batch on an aeroplane before the part is on one.

A third is worth naming for a different reason. Elevated temperature tensile under AC7101/3 code (B) is the test that most often forces superalloy and titanium coupons onto a flight to Europe. It is held here, in Navi Mumbai, under accreditation.

Send a coupon, not a finished specimen

Standard specimen machining is held under accreditation, AC7101/7 code (Z), and TCR operates its own machine shop. A coupon or an offcut is enough. A manufacturer does not need to machine finished specimens before sending them, and does not need to qualify and audit a separate machining source in order to use the laboratory. A raw heat-treated block arrives and a finished, tested, reported specimen leaves, with no third party in the chain of custody. Heat treatment verification and metallurgical evaluation sit alongside these on the NABL scope.

What follows is a region-by-region reading of the QML listings, taken in August 2026. These facilities are the manufacturing backbone of Indian aerospace, and every one of them carries a recurring, audit-driven need for independent materials evidence. TCR Engineering has no formal Nadcap testing engagement with these organisations today; this map is published because a domestic ecosystem works better when its members can see each other.

Karnataka: aerostructures and machining

Bengaluru, Belagavi, Kolar, Mysuru and Dharwad hold 20 of the 51 listings, the densest aerospace cluster in the country. The work is aerostructures, machined assemblies, investment castings, forgings, fasteners and metal injection moulding, much of it exported into Boeing, Airbus and engine-programme supply chains. For this cluster the tests that gate despatch are tensile at both temperatures, grain size, case depth, alpha case on titanium structures, and machined specimens cut from production coupons.

Telangana: engines and superalloys

Hyderabad, Medchal, Ranga Reddy and Sangareddy carry nine listings, and the profile of the work is the most metallurgically demanding in the country: rotating turbine airfoils and engine components, special melts and superalloys, precision defence and helicopter assemblies. Here the binding tests are elevated temperature tensile, superalloy metallography, interior and case-depth microindentation, and conductivity for temper verification.

What a domestic Nadcap testing loop changes

The arithmetic is not subtle. A coupon couriered within India reaches Navi Mumbai overnight; the same coupon air-freighted to a European laboratory spends two to four weeks in transit, customs and queue before the first test starts. Across a year of furnace qualification runs, lot acceptance batches and first article campaigns, a domestic loop returns whole months to a production calendar and keeps the testing spend inside the Indian economy.

What disappears with the distance is more than the freight bill. No export documentation, no international freight on specimens, no customs delay on the return leg, and no overnight gap when a result needs to be discussed or a retest agreed: the manufacturer's metallurgist and the laboratory's can be on the same call, in the same working day. A supplier's quality auditors can walk the laboratory floor in an afternoon rather than a time zone away, which is how vendor confidence is actually built. And a domestic laboratory can plan around a customer's project schedule rather than asking the customer to join a queue.

Behind the accreditation sits the craft, and this is the part certificates cannot show, because they all look alike. Methodology is the whole of an independent laboratory's product: calibrated machines, qualified operators, uncertainty budgets, proficiency rounds under AC7101/14, and a report a prime's auditor can trace line by line. Materials testing is not a division of TCR's business. Since 1973 it has been the whole of it. The people who look at a customer's samples are metallurgists who have spent their working lives on fracture surfaces, microstructures and case depth traverses, and who treat a wrong number as a failure of the laboratory rather than a rounding matter. That is the standard held internally, and it is the reason customers stay. The industrial research division extends it upstream, with experienced metallurgists and fracture mechanics specialists supporting Indian aerospace and space startups as well as established players on material selection, qualification planning and test programme design.
